We created the open-source wind power logo because one didn’t exist.

In the fall of 2008, our office was working on a print project that was completed with wind power. As a part of the client’s environmental responsibility policy, manufacturing that used electricity was sourced to wind-powered vendors and materials.

We searched for a logo to indicate this attention to detail. The logo needed to be able to printed in a single color, legible and immediately recognizable at a small size, and not conflict with other brand identity symbols. Our thought was we'd be able to find a logo similar to the ubiquitous recycle symbol.

Searching for the mark

We began looking for a high-quality logo that matched our specifications but it didn't exist. So, we drew one for everyone to have access to and use. This logo is a free, open source solution for anyone to use.

Using the Wind Power Logo

It is our intent that you find this logo useable for any and all initiatives you may be involved with that use complete or partial wind power. There's no cost, and no credit necessary. However, we do ask that if you use it in electronic media, that you provide a link back to this site, or to the orignal post at stressdesign. See the downloads page for additional application ideas.

Drawing the mark

The specification for this project was clear and simple. To design and develop a flexible timeless symbol. Above all, this symbol which we intend for a variety of uses should be drawn in a way that will allow it to render legibly on any media, surface or application. With wind farms not far from our office, we had ample resource. In the end we were able to draw an accurate, stylized logo that stands up to the acid tests of what a good logo or trademark symbol should be:

  • Legible
  • Scalability
  • 1 color reproduction
  • High or low resolution rendering
